Irish Boat Shop, Traverse Bay, MI
McAlestor, OK – Meeco Sullivan recently announced the completion of a new transient dock at the Irish Boat Shop in the Little Traverse Bay area of Lake Michigan. The Irish Boat Shop has a 60-year legacy with three locations on Lake Michigan. Unfortunately, the Great Lakes did not see their expected seasonal decline in water levels during autumn and winter of 2019, which led to near record high water levels in spring and summer. The Irish Boat Shop’s busy transient dock was rendered useless as the rising water levels fully submerged their fixed structure. Unable to remove and replace the dock due to the high cost, the marina sought out alternative solutions from Meeco Sullivan. The Meeco Sullivan team recommended a creative solution with their fully adaptable galvanized steel design where 17.5” steel truss frames were manufactured to sit atop the existing fixed dock, providing the necessary clearance above water level. The design also features a custom-built utility tray through the center of the dock for easy installation and access to utilities. With the old dock now serving as the foundation for the new Meeco Sullivan steel system, the Irish Boat Shop also has the option of easily converting their new steel frames to a floating dock system. Meeco Sullivan Regional Sales Manager, Nick Nelson commented, “Irish Boat Shop was extremely pleased that we were able to work with him and design and engineer a cost-effective solution so the docks are fully functional during the high water conditions on Lake Michigan.”
There is little to no control over the water levels in the Great Lakes, however Meeco Sullivan has the expertise to develop smart solutions to the most demanding obstacles. Michael Esposito, President of Irish Boat Shop, expressed his appreciation for Meeco Sullivan noting, “Meeco Sullivan has built us a very nice dock, which I am quite impressed with considering the complexity of our situation and the minimal information we gave them to work with.”
